Senator Sherwin Gatchalian reminded the government to strengthen its monitoring against counterfeit goods and fraudulent sellers amid the success of the e-commerce industry brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gatchalian pointed out that current laws do not cover sufficient penalties against those engaged in illegal e-commerce activities.
But through Senate Bill No. 1591 or the Internet Transactions Act, the senator said that Filipino consumers will get better protection against fake goods and scammers present on the Internet.
The bill aims to establish an e-commerce bureau, a one-stop-shop for consumer complaints and Internet transactions, serving as a regulatory body for the online selling sector in the country.
