Akbayan! Youth called on the government for limiting its coverage to 7,000 public schools under its Internet connectivity project, citing that there are over 40,000 other public schools equally struggling to cope with online or distance learning in the Philippines.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte revealed in his weekly report to Congress that the Department of Education (DepEd) is procuring Internet connection for 7,000 public schools with funding of P700 million.

The youth group, however, said the DepEd needs about P4 billion more to make sure all public schools across the country are hooked up to the Internet.

“The Internet program for schools won’t be done before April 2021. How can they insist on opening the school year in August and say ‘bahala na to students and teachers for half a year,’” Akbayan! Youth Chair RJ Naguit stressed.
