The official student publication of the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu, Tug-ani, reported the recent emergence of fake accounts of UP students and alumni on Facebook.
Most of the accounts used the usernames of activists arrested during an anti-terrorism bill protest on Friday. At least thirty of these dummy accounts bear the names of Bern Cañedo and Nar Porlas.
However, students from other schools are also experiencing similar cases. While the issue is alarming, the UP Office of the Student Regent advised Facebook users to report suspicious accounts instead.
To report such accounts, social media giant Facebook instructs users to identify and go to the profile of the fake account. Then click the three dots (…) found under the cover photo and select “Find Support or Report Profile.” Lastly, choose “Pretending to Be Someone” under the list and specify who the account is pretending to be.
