House of Representatives Deputy Speaker and Antique congresswoman Loren Legarda asked the Committees on Basic Education and Culture, and on Higher and Technical Education to investigate the implementation of Nationwide Free Public Internet Access Program (Republic Act No. 10929).

Legarda said that under the 2018 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the Congress assigned P327 million for the installation of free Wi-Fi in state universities and colleges (SUCs).

According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), only 67 SUCs are part of the free Wi-Fi program while there are 112 SUCs in the Philippines.

In light of this, Legarda asked the DICT to file a report on the status of the program’s implementation from 2018 to 2020.

“I admit that P327 million may not be enough. We would want to know the full amount utilized, which are the 67 SUCs, which are the remaining of the 112, how many campuses or satellite campuses?” she asked.
