Samar Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento supported Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin’s proposal for the government to cancel all its projects with Chinese companies involved in the reclamation of islands in the West Philippine Sea that would harm the nation’s sovereignty.

Sarmiento hoped that President Rodrigo Duterte would also agree, as it would “put absolute clarity on the government’s foreign policy towards China that while we embrace them as allies, we also have our patriotic duty to assert our sovereign rights.” Following this through would show the Philippines’ solidarity in assertively opposing Chinese aggression at the West Philippine Sea.

Sarmiento added that auditing all government projects that involved contractors is in order, which will determine companies related to reclamation projects.
