Senator Grace Poe said that government officials responsible for the delays in setting up information and communications infrastructures across the Philippines should be held accountable.
Poe cited the Ease of Doing Business Act and Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) Circular No. 8, stating that concerned government units are mandated to process and approve permits and clearances for the network infrastructures such as cell sites within seven working days max.
Bureaucratic hurdles have been slowing down the construction of cell sites which are now urgent and essential amid the COVID-19 crisis.
Poe stressed that if the government cannot provide adequate Internet connection during difficult times, it’s a huge disservice to the Filipino people. “To deny our people their basic right to connectivity at this crucial period is sheer neglect and dereliction of duty,” she added.
