The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a memorandum order that extends the validity of telecommunications and broadcast permits until the last working day of December 2020.
By this, telecommunications companies (telcos) can still apply for permit renewals or licenses at the NTC central office in Quezon City. “Hand-in-hand with the government, we will be able to surmount the challenges presented by COVID-19 and continue improving communications services for Filipinos nationwide,” said Smart President and Chief Executive Officer Al Panlilio, praising the move of the NTC.
The NTC will be the one responsible for determining the performance of telcos, as directed by President Rodrigo Duterte. In his 5th State of Nation Address (SONA), Duterte called out telcos to improve their services by December. In response, telcos complained that they’ve been facing red tape and complex permit processing, hampering their movement to put up cell towers that would improve Internet connectivity in the country.
