Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque clarified that President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans in banning any mobile applications, much less TikTok, in the Philippines, despite security threat allegations of leaders in other countries.
“Wala pong ganun. Sa mga nagsasabi na si Presidente nanunupil ng malayang pananalita, wala pong kahit isang website na pina-ban ang Presidente,” said Roque. The spokesperson added that he sees no reason to ban TikTok in the country. He himself tried and shared his first TikTok video last March.
President Donald Trump planned to ban the Chinese video sharing app to halt its operations in the United States (US), claiming that it poses a risk to national security. The US can order its developer ByteDance to divest ownership of TikTok under the reason of national security risks, according to reports. Meanwhile, India also banned TikTok due to similar concerns.
