The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board’s (MTRCB) proposal to regulate or censor TV shows and movies on online video streaming platforms such as Netflix gained criticism among lawmakers. This time, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano spoke up that the plan was absurd.
MTRCB’s regulatory powers and functions are to approve, disapprove, delete “objectionable portions” from movies and television shows, or ban them altogether. However, Cayetano pointed out that the Board has “no jurisdiction over Netflix and other online content.”
Cayetano said that MTRCB should realign its priorities and address more critical duties, such as helping the struggling entertainment industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
