In spreading awareness and appreciation for the Philippine culture in the digital era, a Kapampangan software engineer developed an app for learning the ancient Kapampangan writing system “Kulitan.” Kulitan is an indigenous Kapampangan script that has survived since the 1300s.
“Ginawa ko itong app and font dahil gusto kong makuha ang interes nila. Cool siyang tingnan. Para ito lang ang vertical writing system sa Pilipinas at tsaka hindi mo ito mahihiwalay sa Kapampangan language,” said Keith Manaloto. “Sana maging aware ang mga Kapampangan na nag-e-exist ito at sana gamitin nila.”
“Learn Kulitan” app’s main functions is to teach you how to read and write in Kulitan. It provides eye-pleasing visuals and historical context for you to learn the depths of the language and and writing. It also has a transcribe feature to write Kapampangan in Romanized text into Kulitan script, and vice versa, as well as a Kulitan keyboard.
“Learn Kulitan” is so far only available for free in Google Play.
