Youtube picture-in-picture feature

After announcing the picture-in-picture (PiP) feature last June, Youtube finally released it to iOS, accessible only to Premium subscribers.

The picture-in-picture tool allows users to watch Youtube videos in a mini-player on the device while using other apps. However, this highly-demanded feature will only be up until the end of the month.

Youtube Premium subscribers have the privilege to enjoy features ahead, though in the form of experimental. The picture-in-picture tool is included in one of the new experimental features.

While there’s no explanation on what will happen after the due date, the feature may become available to everyone, both free and paid versions.

But for those eager to try it out and have the means to subscribe to the Premium version, here’s how to activate our dear little PiP:

  • Go to www.youtube.com/new
  • Under the lists of new experimental features, you’ll see “Picture-in-picture on iOS.” Click the “Try it out” button.
  • Either swipe up or navigate from the app using the home button while you watch a Youtube video. From there, the PiP is automatically working its magic.

The Youtube video will pause when you lock your phone screen.

Another experimental feature to try out for Premium subscribers is the “Translate comments,” available for iOS and Android users.
