Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian urged telcos to consider installing cell sites in every Department of Education (DepEd) schools to provide better Internet access for students and teachers.
“Our proposal to our telecommunication companies is to use the available land of our public schools,” he explained.
Gatchalian pointed out that doing so will help enhance the application of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the country’s public places and boost the capacity of schools to implement distance learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The senator explained that public schools are the right areas for building cell sites as each barangay has a public school, which can help establish better Internet access across the Philippines.
“Each barangay has a public school, and if we can build cell site and Wi-Fi-based station for every public school, we can cover the whole Philippines because each barangay will have a cell site,” Gatchalian added.
