Ayala-led Globe Telecom, Inc. acknowledged the challenge of President Rodrigo Duterte in his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), threatening telecommunications companies to improve services by December or face expropriation.
Globe noted that it has earmarked $1.2-billion for its capital spending this 2020, aimed at financing its network and capacity. It also cited its upcoming launch of 5G services in the Philippines. The telco giant, however, pointed out that there are still challenges in fast-tracking services, which include the turtle-paced and complicated processing of permits to put up cellular sites.
In response to these problems, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) last month released common tower policy guidelines that seek to free telcos from costly capital expenditures in building towers and speed up the construction of cell sites in the country.
