The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) cybercrime office, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) will coordinate with Facebook’s investigation of fake accounts.
“This gives me cause for worry. We don’t need false information at a time when we’re dealing with a serious public health crisis,” said DOJ Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra.
San Beda University, University of the Philippines (UP), and De La Salle University (DLSU) have reported duplicate accounts of their students, teachers, and alumni on Facebook recently.
Other Facebook users in the Philippines have also reported similar cases.
“While the extent of these incidents is not yet fully determined at this time, we have been receiving reports from different sectors, mostly coming from academic institutions,” said Privacy Commissioner Raymund Enriquez Liboro.
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) also advised people not to panic and to report fake accounts on Facebook if they’re a victim.
