Health and environmental group EcoWaste Coalition bared that mercury-based products are now being sold illegally online.
These products include thermometers, sphygmomanometers, and flask containers of liquid mercury that are cautioned to be “highly toxic.”
EcoWaste chemical safety campaigner Thony Dizon encouraged the public to purchase mercury-free products instead, highlighting the risks of buying mercury-based products from online sellers.
Dizon added that policies and regulations related to mercury-based products should be strictly enforced and actively supported.
EcoWaste has already alerted regulatory agencies, namely the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), about the use of digital commerce to sell mercury and illegal mercury-based products.
