President Rodrigo Duterte said in his 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the government must investigate and tackle the matter of online scams by fortifying the enforcement of data protection and privacy law.
“They expose consumers to various risks related to security, data privacy, and misrepresentation,” stated Duterte.
“We must patrol the country’s cyberspace and enforce online consumer and data protection and privacy laws. We must run after online scammers and those undermining the people’s trust in online transactions,” he added.
Duterte urged a “borderless environment” for stricter regulatory controls besides commending the developments so far in the e-commerce industry.
Philippines’ e-commerce industry had been gradually flourishing due to the quarantine measures imposed by the government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
