President Rodrigo Duterte pressured PLDT and Globe Telecom at his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) to improve their services or face “closure” or “expropriation” by December, but failed to mention the third telco player DITO Telecommunity.
Owned by Davao-based businessman and presidential friend Dennis Uy, DITO Telecommunity has been enjoying Duterte’s support since its launch. The president even claimed that there was “no corruption” in the telco company, encouraging it to fulfill its commitment to providing fast and reliable services.
DITO Telecommunity, however, has been facing delays, citing the COVID-19 crisis as the key reason. Failing to finish its targeted cell site number by July 8, the company received from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) the approval to move its technical audit to January 7, 2021.
