Duterte directs DILG to cut red tape after meeting with Globe chief Cu

Duterte made a follow-up threat after his warning against telecommunications companies (telcos) in his 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA) when Globe CEO and President Ernest Cu made a surprise attendance to his meeting with the COVID-19 task force in Malacañang.

“Si Ernest Cu, presidente ng Globe, siya mismo. Sabi ko kapag hindi mo pa na-improve ‘yan, I will hang you in one of your cell towers,” narrated Duterte.

According to Duterte, Cu retorted with: “You can’t do that because there is no tower. The local governments are fucking it up, saan mo ako bibitayin?”

Cu divulged that government red tape and the tedious process of securing permits are among the main reasons why Globe Telecom couldn’t produce the sufficient cell sites needed to address the poor connectivity in the Philippines.

“We are suffering for many, many years for this, even sa past administrations,” Cu added. He explained that telcos required 28 to 30 permits for a single tower and takes up to eight months or more to build a tower.

Duterte admitted it was corruption among local government units (LGUs) and directed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to focus on cutting the red tape.
