DITO Telecommunity vowed to speed up its rollout in response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s threat against telecommunications companies (telcos) in his 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA). Duterte gave telcos an ultimatum to improve by December or face expropriation.
“DITO is doing all it can to work through the challenges, move forward, and launch soonest,” said Adel Tamano, chief administrative officer at DITO. Owned by Davao-based businessman and presidential friend Dennis Uy and China Telecom, the company is set to roll out by March 2021.
DITO, however, has been facing setbacks due to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. Missing its target by July 8, the company asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to move the technical audit to January 7, 2021. DITO currently has 300 live cell sites out of the 2,500 it promised.
