DITO Telecommunity’s target launch an ‘uphill task,’ telecom analyst says


As Metro Manila and nearby areas shift to stricter quarantine due to the surging number COVID-19 cases, a telecom analyst said that DITO Telecommunity’s target commercial launch on March 2021 would be an “uphill task.”

“March 2021 is a tough deadline to achieve, but I think it really depends on how fast restrictions are lifted,” said Janice Chong at Fitch Ratings to the Nikkei Asian Review.

“The incumbents (Globe Telecom and Smart Communications) themselves are finding it a challenge to [build] cell sites, hampered by the limited mobility due to the lockdown, as well as labor and supply chain issues. For a new player to sort of build network from scratch, it will be very difficult,” Chong added.
