Government officials should apply the Bustos principle when handling criticisms coming from both social and mass media, according to a law expert.
In a collaborative webinar by the Philippine Bar Association (PBA), Lyceum of the Philippines University law professor Atty. Carlo Cruz said that one should develop a thick-skinned mindset when handling criticisms, especially those who are in power.
“Men and government should not be too thin-skinned, and not be easily hurt by the criticisms and therefore, not weaponizing the law. That is the Bustos principle,” said Cruz. He added that the official actions of President Rodrigo Duterte are inconsistent with the reality, citing that his declarations against ABS-CBN and signing of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 exude “personal element.”
