Homeowners of an AFP village in Taguig will face third telco player DITO Telecommunity in a referendum to be officiated by the barangay council in the area, following its petition against the telco about cybersecurity concerns linked to its Chinese backing.

“I am worried about the cybersecurity risk posed by these 5G DITO towers inside our village,” said a retired general who asked not to be identified.

Earlier, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana pointed out that Chinese nationals can easily spy the country through the China-backed telco if DITO cell sites would be built inside the military camps and bases, such as Camp Aguinaldo.

On DITO’s end, the tentative situation adds up to the telco’s existing problems that would partly delay its delivery of services, especially if other communities would oppose for the same reason.
